Topics of this game:
  • Diabetes is a disease that doesn't care who you are. If there are others in your family that have it, you may be at risk. If your grandfathers, on both sides, had diabetes you may be at risk.
  • It is good for your health to stay active. Staying active can help your body get rid of sugar. When you have DM1 your body can't get rid of the sugar, on its own. Hunter plays soccer, with his friends, 3 times each week.
  • Hunter drank ALL of the Gatorade. Those with DM1 may be REALLY thirsty sometimes.
  • When you lose too much of your body's water or get dehydrated, your body stops working right. This is common in DM 1. Hunter sweated all his body water out at the soccer game, and his legs started cramping. Hunter is dehydrated.
  • He pricked his finger 3x a day for three months, to test his blood sugar. The dr. wanted an average, to better treat or diagnose his DM1. This is called an A1C. A dr. may want an A1c to diagnose/better treat DM 1.
  • With DM-1 your body doesn't make insulin. Insulin helps your body control glucose. The dr. can order this to help treat/manage DM 1. Hunter's dr. ordered him to take 2 unit of insulin every night before bed. The dr. is trying to help treat his DM
  • It is important to eat healthy! Sam eats fruit instead of fries with his burgers, and lettuce instead of bread. There is sugar in potatoes. Carbs have a lot of sugar, so he drinks diet soda. Sam has DM 1! He does this to manage/treat his DM 1.
  • When you get dehydrated you lose electrolytes, like potassium. your heart may beat faster and off beat. This is called an Arrythmia. This is a complication of DM 1. Hunter was dehydrated and his heart was making extra sounds. He has an arrhythmi.
  • Blood sugars that are too high for too long can stunt growth and development. Hunter was always shorter than the other boys on his soccer team. His blood sugars were always around 267. This may be a complication of his DM 1.
  • Protein and Ketones can be found in the pee of diabetics, if their body is over-stressed from trying to maintain blood sugar levels, especially if your sick. The dr. will check your pee to be able to diagnose diabetes. Hunter had high levels.
  • I feel ready to tell my nurse what I've learned about my Type 1 diabetes!
